Winter Sports Update

Ari Felhandler and Ryan Horwitz

The winter sports season is starting up and with much intensity.

Girls basketball is off to a hot start with a 3-0 record. Their next game is on December 8th at Novi High School against Novi. Last year the girls were 8-9, and this year they look to improve. If things keep going they way they have been, this season will be a very memorable one for the Lady Lakers.

Competitive cheer and Gymnastics both have upcoming competitions. Cheer has their first competition on Saturday, December 10th at Troy High School at 1 o’clock. Gymnastics also has their first competition on December 13th at Walled Lake Central at 6:30.

Hockey has a 1-2-1 record so far this season. Their next contest is on December 8th against Walled Lake Western at Lakeland Ice Arena, the Lakers new home. Last year, the Lakers finished 7-17 and this year they are hungry for more victories.

Boys Basketball had their first matchup on December 6th. They lost by a small margin of only 5, with a final score of 57-52. The top scorers were Tre Harvey (juniors) and Kevin McAdoo (senior)with 16 and 21 points respectively. Last year the Lakers finished 12-7, a strong season, and they look to continue their success from the previous year.

The Boys Swim and Dive team are splashing their way back into the pool at North Farmington High School on Thursday, December 8th. This will mark the team’s first match back into the water since their very successful last season.

WBHS’s very young Snowboarding team kicks off their second year in existence on Alpine Mountain on January 10th. Check out snowboarding’s promotional video:  IMG_0134

The Laker wrestlers sprung back into action last night with a 1-1 record against two rivals, Waterford Kettering and Orchard Lake St. Mary’s (OLSM). After suffering a hard fought 45-25 loss in their first match against Kettering, the Lakers bounced back to defeat OLSM. Individuals victories included seniors David Morton (119), Clark Chisnell (140), Alex Pallazola (160), Peyton Coleman (171), and Josh Downing (HWT) to lead to a 45-30 win. The Lakers will next match up at Capac Dual Meet Tournament on Saturday, Dec 10th at Capac High School. The JV team will square off at Ann Arbor Pioneer High School for another tournament.

Congratulations to Jacob Binke for winning the November edition of Laker Athlete of the Month with 288 votes.
