Student Government can be a great way for a student to strengthen their leadership skills while doing what they love, and West Bloomfield High School allows students to do just that. The freshman class (Class of 2020) Student Government elections happened on Friday, January 16.

Students who ran for freshman Student Government were Mackenzie Barbat, Carli Bordelove, Margo Budde, Holly Daugard, Sara Filby, Dhiya Krupashankar, Ashley Lynch, Lara Mathias, Jacob Nafso, Noor Sabri, Hailey Saroki, and Ayushi Uppal.

Only 10 of the students could get a coveted spot on Student Government for the Class of 2020. These students were Mackenzie Barbat, Margo Budde, Holly Daugard, Sara Filby, Dhiya Krupashankar, Lara Mathias, Jacob Nafso, Noor Sabri, Hailey Saroki, and Ayushi Uppal. These students were elected by their peers through an email voting link.

“Student government helps out with the school and community. We’ve done things like ‘Meals on Wheels’ which was giving people food on Thanksgiving. We did the homecoming float, do fundraisers for our class, and we go to school events like sports, theater, and choir to go and support them,” said Holly Daugard, an experienced member of Student Government.

Elections for an officer position (president, vice president, secretary, or treasurer) will take place soon. Only students who have won a spot on Student Government can run for one of these positions.

In the school year of 2016-2017, what will change? What will stay the same? Only time can tell.
