WEST BLOOMFIELD- Heavy downpour and slippery conditions did not deter the Lakers on Friday night’s Homecoming game as the OAA Red leaders extended their winning streak to five games in a row following a resounding 48-20 victory over the Troy Athens Red Hawks.
West Bloomfield posted a shutout in the first half, jumping to a 28-0 advantage by way of two rushing and two passing scores. The final touchdown of the half came on a 71 yard pass as senior quarterback Bryce Veasley connected with junior wide receiver Tre Mosley. Defensively, the Lakers remained potent as they forced several three-and-out scenarios and forced a fumble, recovered by senior safety Richie Sanders.
The second half featured a majority of West Bloomfield’s second team as rain enveloped the Swamp. Leading the Lakers were junior quarterback Anthony Romphf and senior wide receiver TJ Newby, who capped off West Bloomfield’s scoring total on a 29 yard touchdown pass with 7:26 remaining in the game. On the defensive side of the ball, senior linebacker Lewis Bingham tallied 7 tackles as Chase Swoope added his own score on an interception returned for a touchdown late in the 3rd quarter.
The Lakers (5-2, 5-1) will face a familiar opponent in Southfield A&T on Friday following two losses to the Warriors last season, with the latter coming during the second round of the playoffs. Sitting at 3-4, the Warriors are not quite the team they were last year. However, they will still pose a tough opponent for the Lakers, who will travel to Southfield for the 5:30 PM matchup. With a win on Friday, the Lakers can clinch a playoff berth and enter their Week 9 crossover matchup on a six game win streak, putting them atop local and statewide polls as one of the top teams in the state.
