On February 1, West Bloomfield High School’s African American Awareness Club presented a “Rise Up” assembly in order to kickoff Black History Month. The student organization invited Carolyn Clifford, from WXYZ News, to come and tell her story. As well as sharing a part of her life, Clifford discussed the importance of her family, and the sacrifices they had to make to help her get where she is today. Clifford even mentioned the #metoo movement that helps people stand up for sexual harassment. Her inspiring words filled students with confidence, and inspired them to RISE UP when people are treated unfairly. The assembly also included student performances and speeches to help raise awareness, and encourage students to be the best they can to each other.

This week, there will be a spirit week in order to continue the positivity and inspiration. Here is the theme of each day:

Monday- Blackout Day

Tuesday- 90’s Day

Wednesday- Afrocentric Day

Thursday- Black Excellence Day

Friday- Sickle Cell Awareness day
