In today’s day and age, it may feel daunting to try to make a difference. Everything going on in the world seems so big and out of our hands. However, being a part of a like minded community of people wanting to support and help out others is the best way to start. WB’s Unicef chapter brings a wonderful sense of togetherness to WB students who want to better the lives of people struggling.
President Inaya Qureshi stated, “Unicef itself is a national organization that supports rights of underprivileged children around the world! We are a High school chapter that represents their beliefs.” There are many ways that the club goes about supporting Unicef’s beliefs, “We raise funds for children around the world, spread awareness about current events affecting these children, and we host fun community service events to educate people about child protection.” She added.
The fundraising and community service events are just the beginning though when it comes to activities the club hosts. “Most people wouldn’t expect how creative and fun our meetings and initiatives can be. Earlier this year, we had a ‘Spookiecef Week’ where we hosted a festive spirit week at our school and gave out goodies in the morning.”
“Last school year, our members made cool bracelets together and sold them for our bracelet fundraiser. We donated 80% of proceeds to Unicef! We love brainstorming unique fundraising ideas that our student body will love.” Qureshi said.
Qureshi started this club last year in 2023 and came up with the idea when doing some introspective thinking. “In my sophomore year, my privileges to be a student and have warm clothes and food became more and more apparent to me. I’ve known and supported Unicef before, so after researching Unicef Clubs, I decided to start a Unicef chapter at our school. I love seeing the passion and creativity of our club come to life!” She explained.
Her altruistic initiative allows the club to thrive and the privilege that students have at WB is able to be shared to those in need. She said,“Leading our club gives me the opportunity to empower others to make a difference. It is definitely rewarding to be a part of a team of like minded peers who are just as committed to helping children around the world.”
No matter your experience with volunteering or level of knowledge on Unicef’s specific message, this club has a place for you to learn, make friends and make an impact. She added, “It’s also important to recognize and be grateful for how lucky we are as students at West Bloomfield. If you would love to educate others about supporting children around the world our club is a great opportunity for you! Even the smallest differences create meaningful change.”
Upcoming on this Friday, January 11th, a Unicef meeting is taking place in Mr. Kisse’s room #204. Qureshi said, ”From 2:30-3:00 we will enjoy snacks, celebrate the new year and discuss our upcoming Valentine’s day fundraiser. We love seeing new members who are interested in supporting children’s justice and hope to see you there!”
