Skiing is a very difficult sport to master yet we have so many pros here at WB! The boys and girls varsity teams have a slalom, meaning smaller turns, race next week and have been preparing diligently.
Member of the girls varsity ski team, Mia Elsen, explained the environment of the team, “the team is like one big family! You are practicing with the same people, 4 days a week, and end up getting close to so many of them. You are constantly getting better and there’s always room for improvement.”
“The ski team at WB is very fun and you meet a lot of cool people who will help you whether you have experience in skiing or not. It’s also a great place to make new friends,” said Sienna Duggal, an exchange student from Germany who just joined the team this year.
The girls and boys ski teams have races once a week every Tuesday until February. Then, they switch disciplines every week and practice Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. All of this to get them ready for the divisional and regional competitions later in the season.
Duggal added, “What I love most about being on the ski team is that I get to meet so many great people. The WB ski team has a coach from the Hartland High School ski team so we all practice together! It helps a lot.”
The time and effort that players on the ski team have to put in cannot be overlooked. Duggal said, “Regular skiing is very very different to ski racing and it can be hard to learn at the beginning, but you will definitely catch on and it’s a great way to gather new skills.”
Elsen added, “Yeah, the time commitment and effort you need to put in for skiing is harder than it looks. It’s definitely a challenge but is still super fun!”
Overall, the ski team is a very positive, encouraging, challenging, and rewarding environment. It pushes you to do your best while also allows you to make so many new friends and connections along the way.
Elsen said, “I just really love how supportive the team and our coaches are. I love that we practice with another team and the fact that we get to meet kids from other schools is so cool!”
