When Donald Trump was elected as the 47th president of the United States, he promised many new policies and decisions would be made. Today, about 10 weeks since he took office, these promises appear to be progressing.
Everyday there are numerous shocking news titles, and many publications have whole sections dedicated to what Trump had done that week.
He’s everywhere all over the news, so what do high school students think about this and how do these decisions impact their own lives?
“I mean it’s definitely scary,” junior Josh Weiss said. “I feel like new, worse stuff about him is coming out each day and it makes me scared for my future. Lately I’ve been avoiding the news just to not stress myself out.”

The U.S. recently declared an economic emergency, and Trump announced tariffs of at least 10% on all countries that export to the U.S. While 10% might not sound significant, stock markets worldwide have experienced declines.
“It’s really worrying to me how he just throws money around. He has no concept of how the average American citizen lives their life and just that alone gives him no right to be making decisions over them.” Explained Junior, Carson Semanson.

According to CNN, “If President Donald Trump maintains the massive tariffs he announced today, his unprecedented trade policies will probably cause both the US and global economies to fall into a recession in 2025, JPMorgan analysts said in a note to investors.”
Junior Sela Kubiak said, “I just can’t believe how many people still think this is a good idea. Okay, maybe you supported Trump back when you didn’t realize what was going on but he’s practically spelling out to you that he’s a crazy person.”

This tariff decision was called ‘Liberation Day’ by Trump, and he has been defiant towards any opposition to his policies.
Weiss explained, “I wish the people who supported this could understand that this isn’t just affecting the countries taxed, but also us.”
Weiss specified, “Especially things like clothes and shoes which so many of the things we wear are made in other countries like China or India. These things we take for granted will start to become luxuries and we’ll know why.”
Despite all the negative news that gets shown every day, good things are still happening, and hope is one thing that might help in overcoming these challenges.
Semanson said, “We have to have hope and we have to stand up for what we believe in. We need people pushing forward and fighting against evil so that we can have a good future.”
