Mr. Jakeway and Mr. Reed are teaching Wilderness Survival. The new Wilderness Survival class to give students an opportunity to learn important outdoor/camping skills (Like building fires and shelter). At first, this was going to be a club called The Great Outdoors club until Mr. Pace made it into a class so that it could be taught during the school day instead of after.
Kids who are interested are more likely to choose it as a class than to go to an after-school program, and now they can. When interviewed about this class, Jakeway was very willing to give his response.
Right now in September they are learning basic knot tying, for the purpose of an upcoming lesson where they will have to build their own shelter.
This shelter building section will have two different parts, the first time they will be provided a tarp and rope to make their shelter.
“The second part of it, they’ll have to basically create a shelter out of whatever they find, they’re not given any materials other than the rope,” stated Mr. Jakeway, who is excited and ready to see how students will do with this section.
It seems the teachers are enjoying this unique class, and it’s even mentioned that nothing like this was an option in school for them. “No, no there was nothing even close to this in school,” said Jakeway, “I would’ve definitely taken it.”
