The 86th annual Academy Awards took place on March 2nd, 2014 on ABC. The show was hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, who has hosted once before, and had its highest ratings in over a decade with 43.7 million viewers. The show included performances by Idina Menzel, Pharell, Karen O, and U2 (all of the Best Song artists), as well as Pink and Bette Midler.

The theme of the night was “Heroes in Hollywood.” The broadcast included a montage full of the biggest cinematic heroes such as Iron Man, Harry Potter, and more. The In Memorium montage ended with recently deceased Hollywood legend Philip Seymour Hoffman. Bette Midler performed “Wind Beneath My Wings” after the montage. The ceremony also honored the anniversary of the Hollywood classic The Wizard of Oz. Pink performed a cover of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” while wearing a red sparkling dress, embodying Dorothy’s iconic ruby red slippers.

Ellen DeGeneres kept the mood relaxed and fun throughout the night. She kept the atmosphere relaxed and casual with all the huge movie stars. She even ordered pizza, bringing a real local pizza delivery man on the stage. They went through the audience passing out pizza to the stars. She famously crashed Twitter when she took a “selfie” that included the likes of Meryl Streep, Bradley Cooper, Angelina Jolie, Kevin Spacey, Channing Tatum, and many others. That selfie has now broken the record for most retweets, with around 3.3 million retweets.

Winners of the night included 20 Feet From Stardom for Best Documentary Feature, The Great Gatsby won two awards for its lavish Costume Design and Production Design, 12 Years a Slave for Best Adapted Screenplay, the first win for Spike Jonze for Best Original Screenplay for Her, and Frozen won, not surprisingly, for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Let it Go.” Gravity, however, was the biggest winner of the night, winning almost every technical award and seven Oscars in total.

12 Years a Slave came out the big winner of the night, winning Best Picture. Other big winners included Matthew McConaughey for Best Actor in a Leading Role and Jared Leto for Best Supporting Actor both winning for their intense roles in Dallas Buyers Club. Best Actress in a Leading Role went to Cate Blanchett for her acclaimed role in Blue Jasmine. Best Supporting Actress went to Lupita Nyong’o, winning for her first film role in 12 Years a Slave. All four of the acting winners gave strong speeches. Cate Blanchett spoke of the importance of females being represented in cinema, “Those of us in the industry who are still foolishly clinging to the idea that female films with women at the center are niche experiences. They are not, audiences want to see them. And, in fact, they earn money. The world is round, people!” Lupita Nyong’o gave a moving and eloquent speech concluding, “When I look down at this golden statue may it remind me, and every little child, that no matter where you’re from your dreams are valid.”
