Just the Pep We Needed
On Friday, September 19, 2014, West Bloomfield High School (WBHS) students and faculty gathered in the gymnasium for the annual homecoming pep assembly. The pep assembly marks the end of spirit week and the start of the homecoming weekend. With seniors and sophomores seated on one side of the bleachers, juniors and freshmen on the other side, and teachers scattered throughout, the day’s festivities were ready to begin.
The pep assembly began with a performance from the WBHS band and color guard. Afterwards, there was an introduction and walk of all the clubs and sports ending with the team of the hour, the WBHS varsity football team. Things quickly transitioned to a game of tug-of-war. The freshman and sophomores battled it out first. Freshman were the first to fall, leaving the sophomores victorious. Juniors and seniors took the stage next. The competition was more intense than the one between freshman and sophomores, but in the end the seniors triumphed. The second to last competition had sophomores and seniors on edge. This particular battle took the longest overall. Sophomores and seniors screamed and cheered, hoping that their class would be the winner. When the tug-of-war concluded, sophomores were named victorious. The sophomores win was followed by a quick round between the champions in the teachers with the end result being a student win.
Following tug-of-war was the colorfully clad poms team. The poms team then danced with male volunteers, whom although they have no experience, also put on a great show for the cheering crowd. The boys put on a show, displaying their silliness by imitating the girls routine.
After the poms team performed, cheerleaders joined each other at the center of the gym to display their amazing forms and mind blowing flips and stunts. Their routines never cease to amaze the crowd.
Before the assembly ended, it was time for the grades to verse each other in a musical competition. The 98.7 Amp Radio DJ would play a track for about twenty to thirty seconds, and then when the music would cut off, a certain grade would have to finish singing some of the lyrics. Each grade would have a different song to sing along to the many current and past popular songs of the radio.
The pep assembly was a great way to unite the high school and its students right before the homecoming game. The homecoming pep assembly definitely got the crowd excited for what was in store for homecoming weekend.
