The WBHS Varsity football team celebrates a well fought victory against Southfield High School

Another week has passed by of scintillating sports, matches, and practices at West Bloomfield High School (WBHS). The athletics have been as strong as ever and have represented WBHS with great pride. Volleyball, football, swim, and dive are the focus of this week’s article, as they led the pack and proved why WBHS has some of the best sports teams in the state. The WBHS student section, also known as “The Swamp,” was awarded “Best Student Section in Michigan” on The D Zone’s social media accounts. The contest took place on popular social media websites which included Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. The contest was organized in bracket form, as each school would face off against an opponent, and the winner would be determined by the number of “favorites”, “retweets”, “likes”, and “shares” that each school received.
On Thursday, October 23rd, the WBHS Varsity girls volleyball team sprung into action, as they swept Ferndale High School (FHS) on their own home court. WBHS won all three sets with set scores of 25-11, 25-10, and 25-9. This team was lead by #11 Senior Shannon Heald with 11 kills and #7 Junior Lindsay Dufresne with 2 aces. The JV girls volleyball team competed on just as high of a level against FHS, winning all 3 sets to conclude with set scores of 25-6, 25-8, and 21-7. Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, October 21st, the JV and Freshman girls volleyball teams competed in a Triangular of which included Dearborn High School, Annapolis High School, and Dearborn Fordson High School. The JV team was victorious with wins in all three sets. The Freshman team had a similar outcome, winning 2 sets and losing only one.
In the cold, chlorine soaked pool, the WBHS Girls Varsity swim and dive teams participated a much anticipated first meet on Tuesday, October 21st, against Royal Oak HIgh School (ROHS). WBHS swam exceptionally well, as they took 1st in 5 different events. Unfortunately, the match ended in Royal Oak’s favor, as they took the 110-69 victory.
Under the bright lights in Southfield, the WBHS Varsity football team finalized their incredible season with a major victory against Southfield High School (SHS). WBHS played sensational defense on the final drive of the game and forced SHS to turn the ball over on fourth down, maintaining a 16-13 lead to end the game. The Varsity football team ended the season with 8 wins and 1 loss, which ensures a playoff spot next week. On the other hand, both JV and Freshman concluded their seasons with losses to SHS. The JV team went scoreless with a final score of 37-0 and the Freshman team fell 14-6.
Overall, WBHS truly had a successful week in sports, with a few exceptions. The Varsity, JV, and Freshman volleyball teams all exited the week without a single loss, as did the mighty Varsity football team. Despite hard fought matches, the girls swim and dive teams and JV and Freshman football teams took few losses.
