Laker pride was in high spirits again as the West Bloomfield High School (WBHS) sports team had another successful week of athletics. The games were intense and packed with students who were representing The Swamp. As most of the fall sports had already reached their climax, winter sports are on the brink of starting. Our cross country team ran their hearts out at their final meet while our football team continued their unbelievable run in the playoffs.

The WBHS cross country team put up a hard fight in a Freshman and Sophomore meet on Tuesday, October 28. WBHS finished 3rd out of 11 schools in the Men’s 5,000 meter and concluded with a powerful score of 118 points. The girls finished in 6th out of 7 in the Women’s 5,000 meter with a score of 122 points. Sophomore Justin Christopher Moody had an outstanding performance placing 3rd out of 181 with an amazing time of 17:35.2 and Sophomore Roopa Gorur placed 6th out of 60 with an excellent time of 21:04.0. This meet was the final meet to a hard fought season.
On the cold, frosted football field of West Bloomfield High School, WBHS’ Varsity football team took on Livonia Stevenson High School (LSHS) on Halloween, Friday, October 31. This was a round one division one playoff game of which WBHS made their third appearance in school history. WBHS was off to a slow start as they squeezed by with a slim 7-6 margin after 2 quarters. Coming out of halftime this mighty Varsity team erupted in the second half scoring 27 points to take a 34-6 victory. The Lakers move on to round 2 of the playoffs and take on Walled Lake Central High School (WLC) at home on Friday, November 7.
On Wednesday, October 29 the WBHS Varsity girls volleyball team competed in an exhausting back to back to back 3 games against Walled Lake Western (WLW), Walled Lake Northern (WLN), and Walled Lake Central (WLC). The first game resulted in a victory, as WBHS sweeped WLW with a set score of 2-0. WBHS won the first set 25-16 and the second set 25-8. Junior #7 Lindsey Dufresne lead this talented team with 9 assists. Unfortunately, the next two games resulted in surprise losses. The second match was lost 2-0 to WLN, with extremely close set scores of 25-21 and 28-26. The third and final match ended in a 2-0 loss, with set scores of 25-20 and 27-25. Despite this loss, Senior #15 Lyndsay Crane had a stellar performance with 13 digs.
Overall, this week in sports has made WBHS students proud to be Lakers. The WBHS Varsity football team remains alive in the playoffs, the very talented WBHS cross country team concluded their season with a punctuation, and next week WBHS looks forward to a well anticipated district Varsity volleyball match.
