West Bloomfield High School’s athletics were in full display during the week of December 8th to December 12th. The Lakers were competing in many different sports and it gave a chance for all WBHS fans a reason to cheer on their teams!

On Wednesday, December 10 the WBHS Varsity hockey team hit the road and battled against the Troy High School Colts. The Lakers entered the 3rd period trailing 3-1, but fell short of the win as each team scored 2 goals to finish the game at 5-3. Goals were scored by Andrew McDonald (junior), Alec Rinaldi (sophomore), and Drew Warnecke (junior). On Friday, December 12, the hockey team continued their road trip and faced off against Jackson Lumen Christi High School. The nail biting game concluded in a 2-1 final. The Lakers concluded the week with another closely contested match up on Saturday, December 13 against L’anse Creuse North High School. Unfortunately, the outcome was a defeat, as the Lakers fell 3-2.

The WBHS Boys Varsity basketball team bounced back onto the court last week as they were victorious in both matches. The first match took place on Tuesday, December 9 as the Lakers took on Waterford Mott High School on their own home floor. The final was 61-53, Lakers. WBHS played stellar defense in the second quarter as they only allowed 2 points. Zach Allread (senior) finished with 20 points and 16 boards and Trishton Jackson (junior) with 20 points. The second match was played away at Dakota High School on Friday, December 12. The final score was 71-57, Lakers. Trishton Jackson (junior) stole the show with 40 points! The JV girls basketball team played Notre Dame Preparatory (NDP) on Wednesday, December 10th at Notre Dame Preparatory.  The final score came out to 31-50, Lakers suffering a loss against NDP.They look to rebound after this tough loss.  The Girls freshman team also faced a difficult loss to NDP with a final score of 41-27. On the other hand, the Varsity team hung onto a slim lead to finish the game with a victory, escaping with a score of 41-38.

The WBHS Swim and Dive team swam their way to victory as they competed against Oxford High School on Thursday, December 7. The Lakers won with an outstanding score of 130 to 55. Two brothers, Nate (freshman) and Nick Neeley (junior) along with fellow teammate, Andrew Rockett (junior), swam through many events as they were some of the top scorers for the team. On Saturday, December 13 WBHS competed in a Boys Varsity Classic of which included multiple schools. The Lakers came in third place with a combined score of 108. The top two finishers were Saline (145) and Dexter (136). The Lakers competed in some of these events, the breastroke relay, butterfly relay, and the 200 meter freestyle.

On Saturday, December 13, the WBHS Varsity wrestling team competed for the first time this season against numerous teams in a Varsity Invitational meet at Capac High School. The Lakers concluded their day with a solid 4-3 record, which consisted of wins over Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, Vassar High School, Memphis High School, and Notre Dame Preparatory School. Leading the way were Matt Gudeneau (senior) and Peyton Coleman (sophomore) who both finished the day with a 7-0 record and Deshawn Cole (senior) who finished 6-1. The Lakers host Bloomfield Hills High School on Wednesday, December 17 and will be set to compete in the Oakland County Wrestling Championships on Friday, December 19 and Thursday, December 20

Special Mention: WBHS Varsity football player and Bowling Green State University commit, Eddie Wilson (Senior), named to the Detroit News First Team All State Division 1, as a Defensive Lineman.

Special Mention: WBHS Varsity football player, Michael King (senior) named Detroit Free Press Division 1 First Team All-State in football.

Despite a few losses the Lakers will continue to improve and advance through their seasons. WBHS has a long legacy of producing some of the finest athletes in the state and that legacy continued with these young athletes. WBHS has the reputation on its side as the Lakers continued to skate, run, slash, and earn their ways to glory. Come back next week for more updated Laker sports news!
