This week consisted of a jampacked schedule of sporting events including basketball, hockey, wrestling, swim and dive, and Winter Guard.
The Varsity Girls Basketball team looked to start the week off right with a victory at home against Lake Orion High School (LOHS), but the Lakers could not seem to take control and go ahead late in the game. WBHS remained on LOHS’ tail for the entirety of the match and fought hard. WBHS lost with a final score of 36-31. Across the hall, the Boys Varsity Swim and Dive made a huge splash as they dominated their Avondale High School (AHS) opponents on Tuesday night. The teams won a whopping 11 out of 12 events to end with a lopsided final of 134-46. The first place individual Lakers included Frank Vawter (junior) in the 200 Free, Jacob Thoma (senior) in the 200 IM, Josiah Bromley (junior) in the 50 Free, Jordan Green (freshman) in Diving, Jared Schulte (junior) in the 100 Fly, Nick Neeley (junior) in the 100 Free, Nate Neeley (freshman) in the 100 Back, and Nathan Pasternak (junior) in the 100 Breast. In addition, WBHS finished first in all three relays. With this victory the Swim and Dive team improved to an undefeated 6-0. They seemed to be unmatched by any opponent thus far this season.
On Wednesday, January 28 the WBHS Wrestling team took down Farmington Hills’ Harrison High School (HHS) and Birmingham’s Groves High School (GHS) in two dual meets. The Lakers easily defeated their competition and look forward to the Oakland-Macomb duals of which 10 teams were selected from each country to participate in.
The WBHS Boys Varsity Basketball team hit the court in Birmingham matching up against Groves High School in search of their 4th consecutive win on Thursday, January 29. The Lakers started off strong in the first quarter with lock down defense only allowing 2 field goals and 6 points in the first quarter. At the half the Lakers lead their competition 30-18, but they were not finished. The Lakers went on to outscoring Groves in the second half 47-19 giving WBHS the hefty 77-37 victory. Guard, Trishton Jackson (junior) led his team with 17 points and right behind him, center, Zach Allread (senior) had 16 points. The Varsity Basketball team improved their record to 10-1. The JV Boys Basketball team followed in Varsity’s footsteps as they went on to destroy Groves 67-40. Guard, Kenneth Harvey (freshman) led the team with 17 points. However, the Freshman Boys Basketball team was not able to finish off Groves as they fell by just 9 points, 58-49. The freshman team has had a constant battle with injuries this season and played this game with two starters inactive. While the Boys Varsity Basketball team battled on the court, the Boys Swim and Dive team looked to continue their undefeated streak at Farmington High School (FHS) against a unified Harrison-Farmington team. The Swim and Dive team did just that as they blew out their competition 124-56. First place medal winners included Charlie Vincent (junior) in the 200 and 100 Free, Tyler Edwards (senior) in the 200 IM and 500 Free, Jordan Green (freshman) in Diving, Jacob Thoma (senior) in the 100 Fly, and Nathan Pasternak (junior) in the 100 Breast. Once again the Lakers swept Farmington in all three relays. This victory marked the team’s 7th consecutive win and continued undefeated season. These swimmers and divers will take on the undefeated Clarkston team on Thursday, February 12th at WBHS.
The Varsity Girls Basketball team looked to bounce back on Friday, January 30th in an away game against Oxford High School (OHS). The Lakers could not spark a run on offense and struggled on defense throughout the game to finish with a final score of 53-15. This very talented WBHS basketball team looks to use this loss as motivation as they prepare to take on Avondale High School on Thursday, January 5th. The Boys Varsity Ice Hockey team took the ice at 8:45 pm against Troy High School (THS) at the Detroit Skate Club. The Lakers entered the game on a 7 game win streak and hungry for more. Unfortunately, the Lakers fell into a hole quickly. They were down 4-0 in the second period. WBHS’ Alec Rinaldi (sophomore) was quick to answer with a goal to end the second down 4-1, but that was the only goal WBHS managed to score. The Lakers fell 4-1 in a devastating loss to Troy in a huge OAA White matchup.
On Saturday, January 31st the WBHS Boys Wrestling team took to the big stage to compete in an Oakland-Macomb County dual meet. This meet is a huge annual tradition of which consists of 10 teams that are hand selected from each county to participate and battle to take home trophies for their county. Despite their injuries, the Lakers wrestled their way to a 4-1 record beating L’Anse Creuse, Roseville, Livonia Stevenson, and Utica. The team’s only loss was to the only team in the tournament to go 5-0, Warren Woods Tower High School. The only other team from Oakland to go 4-1 from Oakland County was Clarkston of whom have a very strong program. The WBHS Varsity Hockey team was back in action at Onyx Ice Arena for a match against Fraser High School (FHS) on Saturday. After finishing the first period down 2-1, the Lakers fought back and took the lead by scoring 4 goals in the second period giving the Lakers a 5-2 lead. This game was far from over. In the third period the Ramblers went on a scoring rampage to tie the game up in the final minutes at 5 apiece, forcing overtime. Both teams could not find the back of the net in overtime and the game ended in a 5-5 draw.

The WBHS Winter Guard participated in an international invitational event on their home territory at WBHS. The invitational consisted of 69 schools from multiple states and even schools from Canada. Both WBHS JV and Varsity Winter Guard teams performed exceptionally well. JV took home the gold finishing in first place out of 69 and Varsity took fourth out of 69. Both teams worked tirelessly for twelve hours on Saturday and made all WBHS students proud.
