Red Carpet or Runway?
Hollywood stars step out in the best fashion for the 87th Academy Awards
The 87th Academy Awards, more commonly known as the Oscars, was held on Sunday, February 22nd, 2015. The movie industry’s biggest stars gathered at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California to commemorate some of the best movies in the past year. Apart from just the moving pictures, one of the most talked about parts of The Oscars is the fashion. Live streaming of the red carpet started at 5:30 p.m. (Eastern time zone) on E!, three hours before the event even began. Thousands of stars arrived in only the best garments and immediately, the buzz began on who wore what.
From red leather gloves to dresses made of 6,000 pearls, the Oscars Red Carpet showcased some of the best dresses and suits in the world. One showstopper was Lupita Nyog’o, who walked down the carpet in a beautiful Calvin Klein custom dress covered in 6,000 pearls. The gown itself was stunning and Nyog’o paired it perfectly with minimal makeup and Nicholas Kirkwood heels.
“Anna Kendrick’s dress was my favorite, I loved the neckline and the color suited her well,” said senior Haley Kleimola. Kendrick was a favorite by many in a Thakoon salmon pink dress with Norman Silverman Diamonds on the neckline. She accompanied host Neil Patrick Harris in a musical number to open the ceremony.
One stunning but controversial piece was worn by best actress nominee Felicity Jones. Jones took a big fashion risk with a jeweled high neck ball gown with ruching at the hip. The look was a modern twist on a classic style dress but some believed it was almost too ahead of its time. Paired with her signature bangs, chunky clutch, and smokey eyes, Jones’ look was the perfect mix of edgy and classy.
Zoe Saldana stepped out onto the carpet in a beautiful blush colored gown that looked stunning with her updo and statement necklace. Although her Versace-designed dress was beautiful, the spaghetti straps that dawned her shoulders got mixed reviews. Many people thought the thin straps made the dress too casual for an event as big as the Academy Awards.
Another actor that risked a more casual style on the carpet was Hollywood’s current “it” girl, Dakota Johnson. She stepped out in a red Saint Laurent number, and wore a casual ponytail. Although she mixed such a formal dress with such a casual hairstyle, her look still looked put together and oscar-appropriate. Senior Diba Ossareh said, “Dakota’s dress was very classy.”
Of course, everyone was buzzing about one particular performer of the night, Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga came out in a bedazzled white number and paired it with flashy red leather gloves. The reviews on her red carpet look were mixed but many adored her other outfit of the night, another white gown that she wore during her Sound of Music tribute performance.
Not only did the girls rock the carpet, but the guys had their own memorable fashion looks. Everyone said goodbye to the classic black tuxedo and opted for a bit of a change. Ansel Elgort and best actor winner Eddie Redmayne both donned navy blue tuxedos on the carpet. The Imitation Game’s Benedict Cumberbatch switched out the tradition black jacket for a white one.
All in all, this year’s Oscars was filled with immense talent, fashion, and entertainment. Only the best of the best of the movie industry are invited and only the best of the best of the fashion industry are worn. The awards may only be handed out for movies but the event unites both industries for a very glamorous night.
