This action packed week consisted of a number of baseball, softball, track and field, boys lacrosse, girls lacrosse, and girls soccer games, meets, and events.

On April 13, the WBHS varsity baseball team was defeated by Salem 11-2. Zach Allread (senior) pitched and finished giving up 6 runs and 7 hits. At the plate Allread went 2-3 with a double and one run batted in. Chandler Sedat (senior) also recorded 2 hits against Salem. Unfortunately, the Lakers could not pull through and suffered a loss. Their record moves to 2-1.The next day, April 14, the Lakers went up against Harrison High School in a double header. The first game Chandler Sedat pitched 6 innings and was lights out. The Lakers managed to drive in runs and hold Harrison to nothing. With the win against Harrison, the Varsity Lakers record improves to 3-1. The next game, West Bloomfield took their second loss on the season. They lost by one run to Harrison 6-5. Harrison scored 5 unearned runs against the Lakers. Deshawn Cole (senior) went 4 innings on the mound, but despite Cole’s pitching, the Lakers were not able to stop the 5 unearned runs that crossed the plate. Robbie Jones (senior) went 2-5, Clayton Kowalewski (senior) finished 2-4 with one RBI, Jack Berkey (junior) contributed one hit going 1-3 with 2 RBIs. With this loss, the Varsity record went to 3-2. For the third day in a row, Varsity Lakers played another game of baseball, but maintained their composure and health. This time around, Harrison was the one who took the loss losing 13-11 to the Lakers. With 2 out of 3 games won in the series, the Lakers could call it theirs. The bats were swinging and hits soaring. Clayton Kowalewski had a 3-4 day with 2  RBIs, Robbie Jones, Akif Lodhi (junior), and Aaron Moskovitz (senior) each had two hits in that game, as well. After this win, the Lakers improved to 4-2. On Friday, Lakers continued their steak to beat Bloomfield Hills 14-4 in a crushing victory. The Lakers were outstanding on offense and collected an incredible 20 hits as a team.  Zach Allread went 2-4 with 2 runs, a triple, and 2 RBIs and Robbie Jones went 3-3 on the day with 2 runs, a stolen base, one RBI, and a triple. Chandler Sedat and Skylar Jeppesen (junior) each had 3 hits and Jeppesen also had 2 RBIs. Akif Lodhi, Clayton Kowalewski, Aaron Moskovitz, and Brendan Bilkovic (junior) concluded with a solid two hits each. Lodhi pitched 4 innings and only gave up 6 hits and 3 runs to get the victory on the mound, improving the Lakers record to 5-2. The freshman baseball team has also been in the spotlight this season. Currently the team is 1-1 with a loss to Rochester Adams with a miserable final score of 19-2 and a win against Groves High School with a final score of 12-11. There was not much offense for the game against Rochester Adams, and many mental and physical mistakes were made on both the offensive and defensive ends. Against Groves, Brian Bembas (freshman) went 2 for 3 at the plate with two base knocks. Ryan Horwitz (freshman) was successful swinging the bat. Horwitz went 3-3 with a double, single, and a three-run homer. He was able to drive in 5 runs that game. Jack Budde (freshman) also finished with an excellent batting performance, as he was able to get a base hit and a double. The Lakers battled throughout and were able to claim their first win of the season.

On April 14 the JV baseball team competed in a double header against Harrison High School. The first game JV won with a huge final score differential of 17-1. The JV Lakers were able to generate hits and turn them into runs. The second game, JV handed Harrison their second loss of the day with a score of 16-4. They played Harrison for a third time, and once again, added another loss to Harrison’s record. This game the Lakers won by a 21 run difference with a whopping final score of 26-5. The Lakers are a perfect 3-0 against Harrison High School this year, and hope to continue that streak against them. The JV Lakers also faced Bloomfield Hills Black Hawks. In a tight game the Lakers went back and forth with the Hawks, but in the end, lost by one run, with a score of 6-5. The JV Lakers now have a record or 3-2, and as of now, things are looking up.
Varsity girls softball took the field against Livonia Stevenson to dominate with the 8-4 victory on Monday, April 13th. The bats were swinging that Monday, and good things came with those hits. Nicole Schwerin (sophomore) had three hits in the game, Avra DeYoung (junior) had 2 hits and 2 RBIs, Emily Chaben (senior) had a single, double, and drove in 2 runs that game. Rachael Jaffe (junior) added 2 hits and an RBI adding to the score differential. Natalie Rosenau (junior) had a hit and an RBI and pitched a gem going 7 innings with 8 strikeouts and no walks. Alexis Forsyth (freshman) had one hit with 2 RBIs. The girls varsity softball team is now 1-1. The Lakers continued on, beating Harrison High School, 14-1, on Thursday, April 16. Nicole Schwerin, Lauren Powers (sophomore), Brooklynn Powers (senior), and Alexis Forsyth each recorded 2 hits, boosting their offense forward. Forsyth was able to drive in 3 runs. Avra DeYoung and Rachel Jaffe each recorded a hit, as well. In the second game, the Lakers beat Harrison again putting up a monumental 21 runs and holding HHS to just 6. Forsyth came through again for her team, with 3 hits and 5 rbis. Schwerin and Jaffe had 2 hits, Avra DeYoung had 3 hits, and Emily Chaben and Sofia Martin each had one hit. With these victories the Varsity Lakers softball team improves to 3-1.

The track and field sprung into action on April, 15 against Avondale High School and dominated the scoreboard to finish in first place in 13 events out of 16. First place finishers in the men’s events included Gervon Winn (junior) in the 110 H. H., Brandon Coats (sophomore) in the 1600 meter run, Navon Mosley (junior) in the 400 meter dash, Jacob Binke (sophomore) in the 800 meter run, Brandon Williams (junior) in the 200 meter dash, and Daniel Wrack (sophomore) in the high jump.

The men’s varsity lacrosse team took a tough loss against rival Rochester High School with a final score of a high 18-9 on Tuesday, April 14. The Lakers did not have trouble finding the back of the net, but their defense struggled to prevent Rochester’s up-tempo offense from scoring. WBHS’ Josh Averbuch (senior) finished with 3 goals, Max Gold (senior) had 2, Jarrell Ku (senior) had 1, Fadi Yousif (junior) had 1, and Carlton Jones (junior) concluded with 1. The Lakers were unable to bounce back the next game on Thursday against Farmington to finish with the 13-8 loss. Josh Averbuch scored an outstanding 6 goals and Jarrell Ku had 2. On Friday, the Lakers seeked redemption and dominated Lincoln Ypsilanti to finish with a blowout 18-1 victory. Jarrell Ku and Josh Averbuch tied the season high with 6 goals apiece, Josh Plyer (sophomore) had 4, Carlton Jones had 1 long with Nathan Pasternak (junior).

Special recognition to Michael Kolodin (senior) for signing his NLI on Friday for Lincoln Memorial University in Tennessee. The JV men’s Lacrosse team entered the week in search of their first victory, however they were unable to take control of the game. The JV team lost 17-1, with the only goal being scored by Ari Felhandler (freshman). This young JV team includes many players playing for the first time and with 7 games remaining against some lower ranked schools, the Lakers will look to pick up some victories and bounce back from their depressing 0-5 record.
The Varsity Girl’s Soccer team looked to build off of their 5-0 victory over Ferndale the week before, but were unable to easily find the back of the net in each of their matches against Harrison High School and Troy High school, resulting in a 0-0 draw and 1-1 draw. The JV team breezed past their Harrison competition this week and unlike the varsity team had an offensive explosion to finish with the 4-0 victory. Lastly, the freshman team struggled against their opponents. The Lakers fell to Troy High School 1-0 and Plymouth High School 3-0.
