West Bloomfield High School’s spring sports were in full action last week as the Lakers look to end the 2014-2015 school year with a bang!

The WBHS varsity baseball team hit the diamond on Tuesday, April 28 and continued their winning streak to defeat Seaholm by a lopsided 8-2 final score. The Laker’s, Chandler Sedat (senior) threw a complete game with an outstanding 9 strikeouts and only allowed 4 hits. Robbie Jones (senior) led off the game with a shot over to right center field over the wall for a remarkable home run. Jones concluded the game 2-4 with 2 runs and one run batted in (RBI). Sedat, not only made a known presence on the mound, but dominated at the plate to finish 3-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Varsity baseball improves to a very respectable 10-3 record after facing some of the league’s most talented teams. The Lakers went on to dominate Seaholm 10-2 the next day. Zach Allread (senior) pitched 6 innings and managed to finish with 3 strikeouts. Allread only gave up 2 hits in the 6 innings he pitched. Deshawn Cole (senior) and Clay Kowalewski (senior) each had 3 hits. Kowalewski had 3 runs scored and 4 RBIs. Once again, the mighty Lakers continued on Thursday, April 30 to beat Seaholm 9-2. Aakif Lodhi (junior) started at pitcher, but only pitched for a solid 3 innings. On the offensive side, Lodhi, was terrific and finished 3-4 with 2 RBIs. Robbie Jones was 2-3 with 2 runs. Winning streaks cannot last forever and the Lakers learned that their next game against Rochester Adams on Saturday, May 2. Despite all the team’s effort on offense and defense, WBHS fell by just 2 with a final score of 6-8. Robbie Jones finished 3-4 with 3 runs, Chandler Sedat went 2-3 with 2 RBIs, and Zach Allread had a single and 3 RBIs on the day. The Lakers could not stop Rochester Adams from coming back late in the game and taking the narrow victory. The Lakers are now 12-4. Before the loss, the Lakers were able to piece together a 6 game winning streak and dominate in the league.

On Tuesday, April 28 the WBHS Varsity Softball sprung into action to compete in an extremely close, 1 run game. The Lakers remained in striking distance in the end, but could not hold on  to Berkley in extra innings, as WBHS fell 4-5. Nicole Schwerin (sophomore) concluded the game with a single and 2 stolen bases, Brooklyn Powers (senior) scored Schwerin with a single. Natalie Rosenau (junior) pitched all 11 innings, recorded 5 hits, finished with 2 earned runs, and struck out four. Unfortunately, this was not enough to keep the Bears down.  In the second game, Rosenau pitched 6 more innings with 9 earned runs and 2 strikeouts. They lost the second game as well 10-2. The Lakers looked for much better results in their next two games against Farmington High School on Thursday, April 30 and were able to deliver. The Lakers took the first game by two with a final score of 7-5, picking up 5 of the 7 in just the 5th inning alone. Natalie Rosenau pitched an impressive 7 innings and finished with 6 strikeouts, Brooklynn Powers played well offensively with a single and an RBI, and Rachel Jaffe (junior) had one single and two RBIs. The Lakers nearly slide passed Farmington in the second match with a final of 5-4. The Lakers came out big late in the game and scored a run in the 7th to take that one point winning lead. Natalie Rosenau dominated throughout the game on the pitcher’s mound, Brooklynn Powers finished 3 for 4 with 2 singles and a double to bring in two runs, and  Avra DeYoung (junior) went 2 for 4 with a single and a double to bring one run home. These two losses will definitely not damper a great season from the WBHS softball team as they came back in the next two to show their skills and dedication.
The WBHS varsity boys lacrosse team looked to bounce back from a two game skid, but just could not capitalize on offense in the second quarter on Tuesday, April 28 against Royal Oak. The Lakers were short on players, but continued to fight to get them a 9-4 loss. Max Gold (senior) led the team with two goals on the night and just behind Nathan Pasternak (junior) and Michael Kolodin (senior) scored one. WBHS maintained hope and traveled to Waterford on Friday, May 5, but once again could not keep the their offensive tempo form the first half. The Lakers fell with a slim margin of 3, 9-6 final. Josh Averbach (senior) dominated with 3 goals and Josh Plyer (sophomore), Ben Reinheimer (senior), and Carlton Jones (junior) each had 1 apiece. Things did not get much better for the JV lacrosse team as they faced Waterford High School and fell 8-1. Braedon Somers (sophomore) scored the only goal for the Lakers. The lacrosse program is still a young and developing program. With continued dedication and perseverance, WBHS will soon rise to the top.

 
The WBHS Girls lacrosse team matched up against three very skilled teams this week and fought hard through and through. The Lakers first took on Stoney Creek High School on Monday, April 27 and fell, 19-10. At the half, WBHS was down just five after scoring 7 goals to make it 12-7, but the team could not gain any more leverage in the second half. Taylor Cantelon (sophomore) dominated offensively and scored 4 goals, while Rachel Harnish (senior) and Audrey Shaw (senior) were just behind with 3 apiece. Ashley Thomas (sophomore) concluded with a solid 15 saves. The Lakers then picked up another loss against Oxford High School on Wednesday with a final score of 17-6. Taylor Cantelon controlled the Lakers offensive game and finished with an outstanding 5 goals and Audrey Shaw finished with one goal. The Lakers then took a trip to Novi for their last game of the week, but struggled to defend Novi’s power offense to finish 20-6. Kate Froling (sophomore) led the team with 2 goals on the night, while Rachael Harnish, Audrey Shaw, Amanda Wigler (junior), and Morgan Gordon (junior) each finished with 1 goal. WBHS is now 1-9, but our record makes no accurate description of the hard work, dedication, and talent these individuals have.

 
The WBHS boys varsity golf team Tee’d up for action on Monday, April 27 for a Gold League Tournament at Links in Crystal Lake. The Lakers dominated their competition with a final score of 354 against Harrison High School (429) and Hazel Park High School (514) for 18 holes. Players, Joey Murzyn (junior) finished with 84, Justin Frommer (junior) 105, Emerson Lawrey (senior) 96, Sean Wigler (senior) 87, and Gurveer Singh (sophomore) 87. Five out of the six listed players made it as the top 6 scorers.

 
The freshman girls soccer team competed in two matches this week, splitting their results. WBHS fell short in the first game at Mercy High School, 2-0 on Monday, April 27. The Lakers then quickly bounced back in their next match against Bloomfield Hills High School on Friday, May 1. WBHS was able to find the back of the net twice and form a brick wall on defense to finish with the 2-0 victory. The freshman team looks to build on this momentum to finish the season strong!
