On September 21, the Boys Varsity Soccer team took to the fields against Farmington Harrison High School. The boys came out hard, but they could not get the offense to work the way they wanted to. They allowed 2 goals while only scoring 1, scored by Joey Murzyn (senior).  Three days later, on the 24, the Lakers were back in business against Royal Oak High School and proved to be too much for the Ravens. The Lakers played one of their best games so far this season capturing their second win of the season. The Lakers played dominant defense to force a shutout and maintained substantial offensive control. Noah Loveless (senior) and Joey Murzyn (senior) each scored a goal for the victorious Lakers. Murzyn is now the leading goal scorer for the Lakers this season, performing very well. The Lakers took home the victory, 2-0. The win improved the team to a 2-7-1 record, unrepresentative of their true talent. The JV Boys Soccer team also took on Royal Oak and took the narrow 1 goal victory after a goal with just minute remaining until stoppage time. The Laker’s team work paid off as Nathan Kinner (junior) assisted Emmanuel Maya for the late go-ahead goal. With the victory over Royal Oak, WBHS’s JV team improves to 3-6-1, as they look to build on their record to finish strong against rival Seaholm High School and Bloomfield Hills High School at on October 13 and 15. On Monday, September 21, the Laker’s freshman team were in action against Berkley High School at home and were utterly demolished in every aspect of the game. Unfortunately, Berkley’s offense was too much to handle for the Lakers as they fell with a 6-2 score to end the game. Goals were scored by Zahayr Junedi (freshman) and Casey Chudler (freshman) with an assist from Miguel Jiminez (freshman).

The Boys Varsity Tennis team was also active this week with matches on Monday the 21 and Thursday the 24. Monday’s match was against Adams High School and the Lakers did not play too well. The only match winner was Rishabh Parekh (sophomore) in a singles match. The Lakers lost the match 1-7 that day. On September 24, the Lakers match was versus Stoney Creek High School. David Filanovsky (senior), Alec Sandberg (senior), and Rishabh Parekh (sophomore) surged in their singles matches winning 3 out of the 4.  Tyler Christensen (junior) and Kyle Crane (junior) also chipped in, winning the only doubles match. The Lakers ended in a draw, 4-4, and their record now stands at 3 wins, 4 losses, and 2 ties.

On September 22, the Lakers Varsity Volleyball girls swept up Royal Oak High School in their match. The Lakers continued their outstanding performances this season against their opponents in Royal Oak. Vanessa Vigier (junior) mustered up 7 kills. Next in line was Gabi Allread (senior) who chipped in with 6 kills. Jordan Ruge (senior) and Shannon Heald (senior) had 5 kills apiece in addition to the rest of the kills. Lindsey DuFresne (senior) had an incredible 23 assists in the game. The team served up an impressive 92.3% , and there were some perfect servers, too. Lauren Powers, (junior) DuFresne, Heald, Ruge, Britney Karacho (junior) and Audrey Kohl (junior) were the perfect servers for the Lakers. Overall, the girls seem to get stronger and better every week, and this week walked away with a 3-0 win. Two days later, September 24, the Lakers came back just as strong versus Athens High School. Allread and Heald both racked up 13 kills against Athens, and there were very few errors committed by the Lakers. The Lakers won again 3-0, improving their record to 10-2. WBHS’s Freshman volleyball team did not fail to excite as they followed in the footsteps of Varsity and dominated the court with two wins. The Lakers first took on Royal Oak High School and took two out of three sets to defeat the Ravens. The Lakers dominated in the first two sets to seal their victory with finals set scores of 25-11 and 25-16. The Lakers then shutout the inferior Athens High School in a league game on their home court in three matches with final scores of 25-15, 25-19, and 21-20. The Freshman Lakers improve to an outstanding 5-1 record with their double victories.

Friday night, September 25, the highlight of the week, the Varsity Lakers football team demolished Lake Orion in a 27-0 shutout in a game under the lights. Once again, the Lakers demonstrated their complete dominance on the field. Garrett Winn (junior) scored the first touchdown with a 7 yard run. Trishton “Toogie” Jackson (senior) had a phenomenal play, scoring on a 79 yard touchdown run. Toogie ran down the sideline and amazingly broke two tackles and scored to put the Lakers up even more, adding onto their monstrous lead. After his play, the student section known as “The Swamp” was absolutely electric. The Lakers improved to 5-0, with a perfect record going into their match up against Bloomfield Hills next week. Unfortunately, WBHS’s JV football team was unable to make defensive stops and  find breaks on offense against their Lake Orion competition on Thursday, September 24. The Lakers remained in in the game after just trailing by 14 at the half, 14-0, but Dragons busted the game wide open by scoring 16 in the third quarter and sealing the match with 6 in the fourth. The Lakers little success on offense translated to just a touchdown in the 3rd quarter to finish the game with a 36-6 loss.  The JV Lakers fell to 2-3 with the disappointing defeat against the overpowering run game of Lake Orion High School. 

The Varsity Girls Field Hockey team fought off a difficult week with back to back losses coming off of a crushing 7-0 defeat against Country Day. The Lakers first took on Dearborn’s Edsel Ford High School on Monday, September 21 and struggled to get into their offensive flow. Morgan Chen’s (senior) first goal of the season scored late in the second half was the only life the Lakers had as they fell to a lopsided 5-1 final score. On Tuesday, September 22, the Lakers were back on the field against Marian High School, but were only able tally one goal scored by Morgan Gordon (senior) assisted by Chen to make it their ninth loss of the season. The Lakers lost on their home field, 3-1.  On the other hand, the JV Lakers Field Hockey team was able to perform much better in their two contests. The Lady Lakers were able to maintain possession and keep an upbeat offensive tempo to end the match in a 1-1 draw against Dearborn Edsel Ford. WBHS was able to create many opportunities on offense and maintain an impenetrable wall on the defensive side for much of the match. The Lakers’ momentum spilled into their next battle against Marian High School as the JV team took the hard fought 3-2 victory, despite of having three inactive players due to injury. The team was able to bounce back in the second half with controlled and aggressive play, as Marian scored all of their points in the first half.

The WBHS Varsity Girls Golf team sprung into action on Monday, September 21 and took on Berkley High School in an OAA Blue Match at sunny and beautiful Evergreens Golf Course in Southfield. The Lakers performed at a very high level, but finished just 10 strokes away from the first place prize, losing the Berkley, with their 205 final score season low not enough to match Berkley’s 195. Leading Lakers included Taylor Pierce (senior) with the best score out of all the players from both teams with a 45, Heather Haely () concluded with a 47, Lizzy Tepper () shot a 60, Lindsay Arthurs (sophomore) shot a 60, Peri Applefield (senior) shot a 61 and Kassidy Myers (sophomore) shot a career-best final of 53. Despite a loss in the books, the Lakers were able to dominate the scoreboard and take home a nice silver medal.
