New App Lets You Feed a Syrian Refugee Child with One Child for Only 50 cents
A new smartphone app called “ShareTheMeal” created by the UN has recently launched, allowing the user to ‘share their meal’ by donating 50 cents to a Syrian refugee in Jordan. The app was developed by Sebastian Sticker and Bernhard Kowatsch. In a recent interview Sticker stated “The idea came to me when I discovered Poverty for a day…I found that hard to believe and if you could find a simple way for people to donate to do good when they want and wherever they want” He continued, “Smartphone users outnumber hungry children 20 to 1. If enough people join in and ‘share a meal’ at breakfast, lunch and dinner, we can achieve zero hunger in our lifetime” While testing out the app in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria in June, more than 120,000 user provided more than 1.8 million meals to hungry children in South Africa. The app officially hit the market November 12th, 2015, and at the moment all proceeds are benefiting Syrian children in Jordan Zaatari refugee camp. Users can donate as many times a day as they would like, with donations beginning at 50 cents. The U.N WFP hopes to stop hunger in our lifetime one country at a time.
