Back at it Again with WBHS Indian Dance!
WBHS’ Indian Dance Team SLAYS competition at a recent Northville High School competition!
March 9, 2016
On March 4th, 2016, Northville High School hosted the Desi Tashan High School Bollywood Dance Competition. Numerous area high schools and organizations had dance team that competed in this event, such as Troy Athens, Farmington, Novi, and Utica. WBHS’ own Indian Dance team attended this event and had a great performance. Desi Tashan is a fundraising event hosted by Northville High School’s Indian American Student Association in order to raise money for Guiding Light, a charity that helps the Dearborn girl’s shelter Vista Maria. Desi Tashan was a well attended event, as hundreds of people were in the audience as well as sponsors, dancing judges, and vendors.
WBHS’ Indian Dance Team consists of Gauri Oak, junior, Avani Samandur, sophomore, Shion Otsuka, sophomore, Pooja Natarajan, junior, Kiran Randhawa, sophomore, Sanjana Ghosh, freshman, Harshini Murali, sophomore, Eva Mulherkar, junior, and Shruthi Tirumala, sophomore. Gauri Oak is the captain, and they sure know how to take a lead on the dance floor! Their performance at Desi Tashan was Bollywood fusion style, which is a mix of traditional Indian dance with modern hip-hop and lyrical routines. Their routine was to the songs Sun Saathiya, Dessert, Lovely, and D Se Dance.
Many students on the WBHS Indian Dance team anticipate that soon WBHS will have their own organized Indian American Student Association, or IASA, and that one day WBHS will be able to host dance competitions of their own.
