Senioritis Strikes!

Attendance Killer Returns With A Vengeance

Senioritis Strikes!

Arianna Heyman, Writer

The Senior class was expecting it to happen. Senioritis has spread, and the only cure is graduation. Each year, the graduating class gets more anxious to leave high school with each passing day. They do not care about their schoolwork as much, and show up to class less and less. Teacher Mr. Corcoran said, “The problem is that colleges announce their acceptances way too early. You guys shouldn’t know whether you’re getting into college until May. So once you get your acceptance you’re like, ‘oh high school?” Mr. Corcoran also said that attendance has taken a major hit. In his senior classes, Corcoran averages 7-12 absences per day. Even on quiz days. Senior Nikki Ostrovsky agrees with his statement saying, “Well when you’re a senior you have most likely received your acceptance letter to colleges by the end of first semester. By that time, you have put your high school career in perspective. You can decide for yourself if it is necessary to attend class or not. If you decide to sleep in, you are aware of the consequences of missing class, and can choose if sleeping in outweighs the work you will have to catch up on. You aren’t as worried about your attendance as in previous years because your future is set. Your only responsibility is to keep your GPA high enough to reach your goals, whatever they may be. Also, by senior year, you have discovered that attendance and grades may not be correlated as much as you once thought.”

Senior Nina Eichhorst says that senioritis sets in because “we’ve been in school for so long, and now we’re near the end and starting a new chapter. High school will be in the past.” Even the underclassmen are already preparing to miss days during their Senior year. When asked if she plans to skip days during her final months of high school, Freshman Emma Lundgren says, “Oh yes! Of course! This morning I slept in for first hour and it was the greatest experience ever. I went to school late and I’m like, ‘I could get used to this! this is the life!’ So senioritis is a huge issue, like people need to look out for it, but at the same time it’s a great issue. Senioritis is great. It feels great to sleep in. You know, teenagers really need their sleep. Get your sleep, have fun, I mean, you only have so much time in life, it’s up to you to make that time fun.” Junior Maddy Ruiz also commented saying, “Yes. So many. Will I even go to Senior year? Like no. Probably not. I miss so many days right now, I know I’m going to miss so many more next year. That’s not even a question.” Some Seniors are trying to avoid the senioritis-virus by just pushing through like Minhal Ansari who says, “I’m trying to skip less these last few weeks because I want to enjoy my last moments here.” As hard as it may be to get up in the morning, this is the last chance to be in the halls of West Bloomfield as a student. So enjoy it while it lasts.
