Spring sports are in full swing and the girl’s shotput and discus team is looking for more people. As one of the field events in Track and Field, practices are right after school until 4:30, but can be lenient with strict schedules. For this sport, absolutely no experience or equipment is required and it is a no cut activity. Everyone is welcome to join and learn. To participate, meet everyone outside on the track after school or contact Coach Garrison (shotput/discus coach, keith.garrison@wbsd.org) or head coach Nick Stration (nickstration@gmail.com).

As the first semester of the 2021-2022 school year

As the first semester of the 2021-2022 school year came to an end, it is now time to start focusing on picking classes for the following year. All freshmen, sophomores, and juniors had meetings with their counselor in the auditorium or cafeteria to discuss making smart choices when choosing a schedule. These schedules need to be put into your PowerSchool by February 16th.
    Students schedules are required to be input into both Powerschool and an online form that was sent to all students emails. Each student must make sure they meet the class requirements for each grade. These requirements will be on the sheet that was handed out to you during the counselor meeting and can be found on the WB Counseling canvas page. Junior, Katrina Acluche is preparing to make important decisions for her senior year.
    “I’ve had to talk with my parents to figure out what I want to take next year,” says Acluche, “For a senior, there are a lot more class options for our electives.”
    As you choose your classes, it is important to check your credits to see what credits you still need to be on track for graduation and what credits you may not have received previously. For those that took a high school math class or a full year of a foreign language during middle school, those credits will be eligible to appear on your transcript for graduation. So remember, make a plan and be careful and certain about the classes you choose for next year.

Imagine being a huge Olivia Rodrgio fan going to purchase tickets once they’re put on sale, only to be put on a waitlist behind thousands of people on the Ticketmaster website, then eventually being met with some “technical difficulties” that leads to an empty hand in tickets. This unfortunately happened to many fans around the world as they faced major disappointment trying to buy Rodrigos’ tickets.
Olivia Rodrgio released the news about the tour for her debut album, SOUR, back in December of 2021, and fans went crazy. They were initially hopeful as they had the opportunity to sign up on Ticketmaster as a “Verified Fan'', which gave Northern American fans the access to unguaranteed first come, first serve tickets for fans. According to npr.org, Ticketmasters website explicitly states that,
“Verified Fan doesn't guarantee that everyone who is verified will get a ticket, but it does level the playing field so that more tickets go to fans who intend to go to the show.”
Tickets may be sold out and unavailable to purchase directly from Rodrigo’s website, but luckily enough for fans, there are still other ticketing platforms where tickets are available for purchase, even in Michigan for her performance at the Masonic Temple Theatre.
While it can be said that things in the beginning got brutal really quick, there is still time left to buy tickets. So for all Rodrigo fans out there, go get your tickets!

    As winter sports make their way through the season, the girls ski team is facing some adversity this winter. They are one girl short of officially being able to compete and race as a team. This means that they are not able to go on and race at regionals which would also impact any chance that they would have to qualify for states. From senior Mariana Lopez of the ski team,
    “We have some pretty good skiers this year and it would mean there would be no way to celebrate our success besides with ourselves.”
    Despite already being on the backend of the season, they are hoping to get one more girl to join so they can compete in some of the end of season races. All you need is skiing experience that will allow you to easily get down a black diamond course. There is no previous racing experience required, only the ability to get down the hill confidently.
    The practice schedule is Monday through Thursday from 3:30 to 6:00 pm, but there are no practices before race days. Races are typically on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Practices and home races will be held at Alpine Valley in White Lake, MI.
    “My favorite thing about being on the ski team is just the atmosphere. Everyone has a blast and it’s a drama-free team,” says Lopez.

Emma Marshall used to be a very shy student, but she seems to have overcome it during COVID before freshman year. In this interview, Emma Marshall talks about how COVID actually helped her become less shy.
“Before COVID, I used to be so shy that I couldn't really talk to anybody except my close friends. The only reason I could talk to them was because I had known them for a while and we were really close. If I was called on during class I would look like I was about to cry, because I was
very uncomfortable with talking in front of groups of people. But then COVID hit. I was so shy that when I got called out on Zoom, I didn't know what to do. And it took me like five minutes to respond. But now that I'm actually back in school, it's a lot easier to talk to people since I wasn't
really able to communicate with others. But now, I could do it. I wasn't able to see my friends and really talk to anybody I missed a lot; it felt kind of lonely. So, now that I'm actually able to see people face to face, it's a lot easier than it used to be. And even though I probably can't do it
as good as people that are really comfortable with doing it, I can at least stand up in front of the class now. I'm able to talk to people now a lot easier. I used to have a lot of anxiety and get really stressed when I had a big project that you have to present in front of the class because it was very hard for me to speak in large groups of people. It was also very hard for me to talk in front of class because the teacher was there and for some reason, I don't know why I'm just very bad at talking to adults and I get really stressed out about it. Now if I have to talk in front of a class or to a teacher, I can actually talk to them. I do get a little bit stressed out sometimes, but definitely not as much as I used to be. I'm very happy with how much I've improved at being able to talk to others; now I can actually enjoy myself in class. If I had to give advice to somebody who had the same problem, then I would just say find somebody that you trust. Ask them for help. And see if they can help you reach out to other people, and maybe practice
talking to them and ask them for some advice.”

Q: What is your name?
A: “I'm Jason Bates and a junior.”

Q: What is your motivation to keep swimming?
A: “I would like to keep swimming because I think it's something that I'm good at and I can contribute to both the team and myself and make both of those things better. And I can. That's a good outlet for me to push myself. And it's probably one of the better sports that I've done.”

Q: Do you have any strategies to motivate yourself to be better at swimming?
A: “I just always remember that sometimes a little pain can be good, and I can use that to push myself and get better and better. And so I always try to be better than the person that's next to me. Even when it's unrealistic, I can still push to try to compete, but I think that there are a lot of things that I can do to make myself better and it's always healthy for both my mind and for my body to get those things down.”

Q: Do you have any long-term goals in the sport of swimming?
A: “I'm not good enough to swim in college, or at least not a big college, but I think it's something I would like to keep up with. I don't really have too many goals other than just beat my old times and maybe even beat my brother’s times. But, I'd like to continue to swim. Even if it's not competitively, it would be good for me and I look forward to it.”
