Serving up Success
Spectrum’s season wrap up of WBHS Volleyball.
West Bloomfield High School’s Varsity Volleyball team had a very successful record. They amassed a record of 29 wins, 4 losses, and 1 tie. On the Lady Laker’s performance, Coach Dana Gray said that this year, they played their strongest season. She stated, “We have become much more competitive this year and able to finish what we start.” She continued by saying, “This year the change has been to really push through to the end. We have set high goals for ourselves and are reaching each of them.” According to their latest stats, Varsity Volleyball definitely has set their standards high.
Varsity Volleyball’s greatest win this season was over Farmington Harrison during the league championships. According to Coach Gray, “We beat them in 4 sets and it was a tough match.” Unfortunately, the League title had not been in the hands of WB for 20 years.
Outside hitter, Gabi Allread (#12, senior), explained that teamwork and camaraderie are prime reasons for Varsity’s achievements. She told Spectrum, “We have an experienced group that has been playing together for awhile. We are all really good friends, which helps create a team cohesiveness.” Defensive specialist, Avra DeYoung (#5, senior) agreed by saying, “Our main strength was the fact that we were so close. It really was like a team full of sisters.”
Junior Varsity finished with a record of 9 wins and 2 losses this season. The JV team has made major improvements, and they hope to continue that legacy when they move up to Varsity next year. JV coach Shelby Gray said, “We improved on our energy and enthusiasm as a team and keeping that high throughout sets and matches.” In any sport, a positive attitude leads to success. The way that Junior Varsity played this season definitely proves this.
Finally, Freshman Volleyball also had a record of 9 wins and 2 losses. “This season we finished with a 6-1 record in the White OAA division! We had the best record in the league, only losing to Avondale!” said their Coach, Elizabeth Grabill, who was very proud of her team.
The staff and students at WBHS are also proud of the Lady Lakers for representing the school and bringing victory to West Bloomfield Volleyball.
