Artists to watch for in 2014
2013 was a big year for music… Can 2014 match with new, great artists?
2013 was a great year for music. There were a lot of artists, however, that burst on to the scene and are yet to break through to the next level. In this piece, we will figure out three artists one should keep an eye on this calendar year.
Chance the Rapper
Chance the Rapper gained some respect from critics in May 2013 after the release of his second mixtape, Acid Rap. His first mixtape, 10 Day, introduced him to some producers he could use, but his sophomore mixtape really garnered him some attention. In a psychedelic, nostalgic manner, Chance created a sound most people haven’t ever heard before. In the fourth quarter of 2013, he began to collaborate with bigger artists, making his way onto the scene. It wouldn’t be shocking if Chance killed it this year in the rap game.
DJ Dahi
DJ Dahi, the 30-year old producer out of LA, finally broke through on the scene in 2013 with production credits on Kendrick Lamar’s “Money Trees” and Drake’s “Worst Behavior”. The melodic, synthy beats produced a lot of talk around in the music industry, and now DJ Dahi is a hot commodity amongst the hip hop faithful. Expect him to have a year similar to Mike WILL Made It’s 2013.
Jhene Aiko
After gaining the eye of critics by singing the hook to Big Sean’s “Beware” and Drake’s “From Time”, the seductive Jhene Aiko dropped a bomb with her EP, Sail Out. It featured guest verses from Childish Gambino, Ab-Soul, Vince Staples and Kendrick Lamar. Her soft crooning and seductive voice has taken America by storm, and now she’s rising to the top of the music charts.
