The Shadow of Death
Death whispers in my ear, “I am coming” he says.
He’s always there,
Always around me, watching me, haunting me. He lies next to me in bed, sharing my nightmares.
Death invades my mind, filling it with unwanted thoughts.
He laughs when I laugh, smiles when I smile, screams when I scream, and cries when I cry.
He sits in the empty desk at school,
He has the face of a thousand dead men.
He whispers in my ear,
“Soon.”

This was a very dark piece but very well written.

Overall, I really enjoyed the almost mysterious- like aspect of the story. I like how it made the reader question when “soon” will be for the character. I also thought it was ironic that death himself was talking. Immediately when I started reading this, it reminded me of the The Book Thief,” because death is the narrator in that specific novel, and the story has a similar, ironic tone.
