WINNER WINNER, CHICKEN DINNER
Covering the winners/events that occurred at the 57th annual Grammy Awards.
The 57th annual Grammy Awards occurred on Sunday, February 8th at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The show is meant to recognize the best artists involving music performance and production. There were a total of 40 categories, and many artists won numerous of the shiny awards.
The first Grammy Awards was held on May 4, 1959. The award itself is named after Emile Berliner’s invention of the gramophone, which is also known as a phonograph. This was made in 1877 for the use of recording and producing sound. Of all the awards, there are the “General Field”, or the “Big Four”, which do not limit nominees by any criteria. These include Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Album of the Year, and Best New Artist.
The winners of the General Field awards this year included many surprises. Three of the four (Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist) were all awarded to Sam Smith or his hit song, Stay With Me. The Album of the Year was a shock to many Grammy viewers, while the nominees had been Beyonce, Pharrell Williams, Ed Sheeran, and Sam Smith. Instead, a less-known artist, Beck, won with his album, Morning Phase. West Bloomfield High School’s Nicole Epshteyn (freshman) was one of the many people rooting for “Queen B” herself, Beyonce. Epshteyn states, “Who is Beck anyway… [Beyonce] is gorgeous. She is flawless.”
The Grammy Awards are not just about the music, the outfits also play an important role for commentary and discussion. Men and women alike were presenting themselves in the top brands, including Alexander McQueen, Valentino, Giambattista Valli, Calvin Klein, Jean Paul Gaultier, and more. The red carpet had many outrageous ensembles, and there were many crazy outfits to label as the strangest. Yet for Blake Rubenstein (freshman), there was no hesitation for his answer when asked who looked the worst. He says, “Iggy Azalea did because her hair looked like a rag on her head… and it looked kind of crazy.”
