The National Honor Society (NHS) reflects the ideals of the an honorable student, and includes members who not only have great grades, but are also involved in the community and the school in all ways. Every year, juniors apply at the beginning of the school year and are accepted in late October, and later inducted in November at a ceremony.

NHS induction was held on Thursday November 10th, in the high school auditorium. The induction began with introductions by Areesha Shahab, NHS president. Following Areesha, keynote speaker Roop Raj gave a motivational speech to the students and family in the audience. This was the first year in a while that an outside guest speaker spoke at the NHS induction. NHS is sponsored by teacher Mrs. Noel Mchardy. Mrs. McHardy was happy with the way that the induction went, stating that “Raj was extremely gracious and kind, and it made the induction special.” With 155 NHS inductees, this is the largest class that Mrs. McHardy has inducted into NHS thus far. In order to be accepted to NHS, students had to complete ten hours of community service, have at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA and participate in at least two units of a school sponsored activity- either a sport or a club. Being in NHS is an honor to students, because according to new inductee Mariam Tariq, “NHS is an organization where you have to work hard to be accepted, and work hard for yourself and your community to stay in.”

This year, NHS is changing their middle school tutoring program. Rather than having an open tutoring session, a high school junior or senior will be matched up with a middle school student in need of tutoring. The middle schooler is hand picked by middle school counselors. Mrs. McHardy is excited about this change because she hopes that it will “not only help students with their homework and help get organized, but also help them to build relationships and potentially look to the upperclassmen for help and support which they do not receive at home”

Students who are academically eligible to apply and are interested in being a member of NHS are invited to apply at the beginning of next school year.
