On Friday, October 12, the Literary Garden Club hosted their annual Haunted Literary Garden event. The courtyard was covered in spooky decorations and filled with club members acting out various works by authors featured in the garden. This included “The Raven”, “The Cask of Amontillado”, “The Tell Tale Heart”, and “The Masque of the Red Death”, all by Edgar Allan Poe. Others included The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, and several other works. For $5, guests were taken on a tour through the garden. The tour concluded with a debate between club members playing Edgar Allan Poe and Walt Whitman about who is the better author. Once back inside, the visitors were given candy.

Teia Kinner, a junior in the club, played “Dorothy” from The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. She said her favorite part of the Haunted Literary Garden is “Getting to dress up and hang out with some really cool people. It’s really cool to see how some people get very attached to their character, which adds to the experience for the actors and the audience.”

The Literary Garden Club has plans to combine with the elementary students at Doherty to help them start a Junior Literary Garden. For more information and to join the club, see Mrs. McQuillan in room #200.
