we are told to test the waters
but not when the sea is ready for us
it churns at our touch
burns on sight
bubbles in sound
and smells of sulfur and tar
this sea we see is an illusion of fear
it feeds on the darkness that is
you don’t swim but shrink
not float but sink
and not live… but survive
