Greetings Lakers and welcome back to Laker Sports Line 2015-2016! After a long summer, the best student sports updates are back! The first week has been action packed and gives us a little taste of what’s to come the rest of the year. 

On September 10th, the West Bloomfield Varsity Boys Soccer team took the field against Lake Orion High School. Lake Orion scored two unanswered goals on the Lakers, handing the Lakers another loss on the season. It was a little uneventful, but the Lakers look to bounce back next game against Walled Lake Central High School.

Storming the courts on September 9th, Varsity Boys Tennis went head to head with Avondale High School. Three gentlemen, David Filanovsky (senior), Alec Sandberg (senior), and Rishabh Parekh (sophomore), each had singles victories contributing to the Lakers effort.  There were also doubles wins by Justin Vassallo (junior) and Krunal Morediya (senior) as well as Kyle Crane (junior) and Tyler Christensen (junior) that were able to propel the Lakers towards a 5-3 win over Avondale. The following day, September 10th, the Lakers were unsuccessful against Rochester High School. Rishabh Parekh was the only singles winner and Tyler Christensen and Kyle Crane were the only victors in doubles. Despite the Lakers 2-6 loss, their record proves that they are a determined team and will come back strong next match against Walled Lake Northern High School next week. 

Girls Varsity Volleyball have been quite active in the sports spotlight competing around the district against multiple rivals. The girls faced off against South Lyon East High School, and performed very well. In the match the team served 95.4% including 7 players serving perfect 100%. These girls were Avra DeYoung (senior) Vanessa Vigier (junior), Lindsey DuFresne (senior), Jordan Ruge (senior), Gabi Allread (senior), Emma Coste (junior), and Audrey Kohl (junior).  Vanessa Vigier contributed to the Lakers performance with 5 kills, as well as Lindsey DuFresne who had 13 attacks. Audrey Kohl also helped the Lakers with 4 aces. As a result of the camaraderie and overall great performance, the girls were able to muster up 2-1 a win. Later that day the Lakers took on Ann Arbor Pioneer High School. In a 3-0 win, the Lakers served a whopping 96.4% with only 2 misses. Lauren Powers (junior), Vanessa Vigier, Lindsey DuFresne and Shannon Heald (senior) were the perfect servers. Lindsey DuFresne also had 17 assists on the offensive side.  The next day  the girls followed up against Southfield Lathrup High School with another 3-0 victory. Nylah Greer (junior) had 6 kills in the game accompanied by Shannon Heald who also had 6 kills. Gabi Allread joined in on the kill streak with 4 kills of her own. Continuing the kills were Vanessa Vigier and Lindsey DuFrense with 3 kills apiece. Audrey Kohl contributed with 2 kills and DuFresne was a major help with an impressive 18 assists in the game. Lauren Powers helped the team with 8 digs and only one error. So far, the volleyball team has been dominating with a 7-1 record.

Friday night was perhaps one of the most anticipated matches of the year. The Varsity Football team had a huge game against their rival, two time state champs, Clarkston High School. Trishton Jackson (senior), dubbed “Toogie” by his fellow players and fans, was able to connect with receiver Navon Mosley (senior) for 27 yard touchdown pass. Jackson finished his game with 5 touchdowns. 4 of them were on the ground and 1 was a passing touchdown. On the defensive side, Jordan Swanigan (senior) collected 12 tackles and recovered a fumble. Theo Majette (senior) had two sacks that night and Evan Foster (senior) had an interception. The Lakers performed with much intensity and showed how much they desired a victory, and prevailed with a final score of 35-28. The Lakers are still perfect with a 3-0 record.
