Based on a study, every night a child goes to bed hungry. Whether it’s in the school district, the city, the state, or the country.. Not every family can afford to give their children a sufficient amount of food over the weekend. In 2005, a school teacher from Kentucky noticed that her students would not perform well on Mondays as they did for the rest of the week. These children were on free or reduced lunches, so, the teacher concluded that they were not doing too well because they didn’t eat much food on the weekend. She started a program called Blessings in a Backpack, which is a non profit organization that provides 6 nonperishable meals every weekend of the school year.

West Bloomfield actively participates in this program. They are packing for about 290 children in the five elementary schools in the district. The committee meets every Wednesday at 12:30 at Abbott Middle School. They are always welcoming new volunteers and accepting donations.

If you would like to help but don’t know how, you can start by participating in the Blessings in a Backpack annual Cirque-Amongus fundraiser. It costs $20 for one child  (ages:5-12). Children will spend a day learning about different types of circus acts, and at the end of the fundraiser, they will perform a show. This event will be held on June 25th, 2016 from 10 am to 3 pm. All profits will be donated to the Blessings in a Backpack in West Bloomfield. If you have any questions, please contact:
