Not everyone rushes home after school. Some students stick around for the Book Club. These students are part of the school’s book club, a small group that meets once a month after school to talk about their latest reads, share opinions, and enjoy snacks together.
One of the club’s first members is Peyton Dooley, who joined the club when it was first announced. She said the reason she decided to join was simple. She enjoys reading and wanted something to keep her busy after school
“I like books, and it seems fun — something to do after school,” said Dooley.
For Dooley, reading has always been a good way to unwind, but being in Book Club makes it even better. She enjoys meeting with her friends to talk, and, of course, eat snacks.
“They bring cookies,” she said.
Though the club is fairly small, they still have great discussions. Members talk about their books, compare opinions, and help each other see stories in new ways. Dooley also mentioned getting to keep the books they read.
“We get the books for free and then we get to keep them after,” she added.
Right now, the group finished reading “My Bloody Mary” and have started reading The Labors Of Hercules Beal. Dooley said she prefers reading at her own pace rather than with a strict schedule which is another reason why she enjoys the club.
“I like that I can read on my own instead of reading once a week where we have to read certain chapters and can’t say anything about them,” she said.
They started the book club, not only by reading, but also with various team building activities, like the opportunities presented by the recent homecoming celebration.
“At our first meeting, we were working on a poster for the homecoming parade,” Dooley added.
“We were doing that and talking about books.”
Another book club member, Tiffany Bertrand, joined for a slightly different reason. She wanted to spend more time with her friends and meet new people who love reading just as much as she does.
“I joined the book club because I wanted to be with my friends more and socialize,”
she said. “Most of my friends joined the book club.”
Bertrand found herself enjoying the reading aspect as well, despite her initial joining for friends and socializing.
“We get food, and we pick some very interesting books,” she explained. “It’s about pirates and a girl who is pretending to be a boy to get on the pirate ship,”
Even though Dooley and Bertrand joined for different initial reasons, both agree that being a part of the book club is one of the highlights of the month. It’s a fun place where students can relax, talk, share opinions, and share their love for reading. Whether it’s the snacks, the books, or the friendships.
